The Fall of Simon Magus

Pompeo Batoni depicted the fall of Simon Magus around 1745–50. Oil on canvas, now in Cleveland, Ohio. Simon Magus, a sorcerer, attempted to fly in front of Saint Peter and Saint Paul but fell to his death. Batoni captured this dramatic moment.

The dimensions of the painting are not documented. The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired it, but the credit line is undisclosed. It remains an Italian cultural piece from the 18th century.

Batoni was known for his technical skill and mythological themes. He gained fame through portraits of British tourists during the Grand Tour. He worked in Rome and served a diverse clientele.
