Coronation of the Virgin

Fra Angelico’s “Coronation of the Virgin” was painted in the 1420s. It uses tempera and gold on a wood panel. The painting is housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The subject depicts Christ placing a crown on Mary’s head, a popular theme in 13th to 15th century Italy. It often includes the Christian Trinity.
